Problem: Lucy’s Hair Design, a small hair salon, employs Spanish speaking staff that services English speaking customers. At times, the staff struggle to communicate available services and prices to customers. Additionally, Lucy’s handles inventory (hair products, hair tools, equipment, etc.) that has never been tracked, counted or included in Lucy’s financial records. Not including the inventory could be causing Lucy’s overall value to be understated. Additionally, if inventory were to go missing due to theft, detecting missing inventory would be challenging because inventory is never counted.
Solution: Study Lucy’s services and create a printed menu that lists all services available to customers. Customers can use the menu to select desired service. Perform a count of all inventory and document the results. Identify the inventory items that can be included in Lucy’s financial books as assets, which could help increase the overall value of the business. Design a schedule and procedures for periodic inventory counts to be performed by salon staff.
